RUSSIAN HILL. Favored by locals, this tiny wine bar can be a tight fit, especially on weekends, but its selection is so good that folks can't pass it by. A few bar stools and a couple of leather love seats comprise the coveted handful of perches, and you'll often find people milling about before they head to dinner. Dozens of wines are available by the glass or bottle, and lots of regulars swear by the sake cocktails ­ not too sweet, not too overpowering. A cheese plate provides a foil to the alcohol, and a nearby sushi place even delivers to your seat.
